Volleyball Sets Attendance Record, Falls to Coastal Carolina in Four Sets

Attendance of 1,382 is the highest ever at Hanner Fieldhouse for a volleyball match
STATESBORO– Despite breaking the volleyball attendance record at Hanner Fieldhouse, Georgia Southern volleyball (13-3, 3-2 Sun Belt) dropped Friday's contest to Coastal Carolina (10-7, 5-0 SBC) in four sets.
"After that first set, Coastal did some really good things, especially in transition," head coach Chad Willis said. "We got out of our rhythm, and when you aren't able to pass, it becomes the battle of the pins, and their two pins went off tonight. We had no answer for that."
Georgia Southern did win the first set, emerging victorious in a 25-23 effort. While hitting just .136, six kills from Reagan Barth were timely enough to seal the win for the Eagles. Jillian Gary also had three kills.
Coastal Carolina adjusted to the GS attack in the second set, taking down the Eagles 25-14.
The Chants hit better than the home team over the final two sets, burying the Eagles 25-20 in both frames. Coastal had two players with more than 18 kills, and the better transition game allowed the team to take a 3-1 win.
Barth's 13 kills led the Eagles, while Gray had 11. Ailie Hair's seven total blocks led all players, and Kirsten Barrett's 21 assists were tied for a match-high.
The attendance of 1,382 broke the previous record of 1,278 set in 2017 against Georgia State after a week-long campaign to pack Hanner Fieldhouse.
"Credit to Eagle Nation for coming out tonight, it was a great atmosphere and really helped us in the first set," Willis said. "We really fed off that energy."
The Eagles and Chants match up once more on Saturday at 1:00, where the Eagles will look to hand Coastal its first conference loss of the season.
