Box Score TROY - Troy's Leanna Johnson hurled a four-hitter as the Trojans picked up a 3-0 Sun Belt softball win over visiting Georgia Southern on Friday evening in Troy, Ala.
The Trojans improved to 31-15-1 overall and 12-6-1 in the Sun Belt with the win, while Georgia Southern falls to 17-29 overall and 6-13 in the league with the loss. Game two of the three-game Sun Belt series will take place on Saturday at Noon ET.
Troy took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Kennedi Gaton.
The Trojans extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Kelly Horne and an RBI single by Taylor McKinney. Troy could have had more in the frame but the Eagles' Janai Conklin picked off Jade Sinness at first base.
The Eagles brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh as Brooke Kell led off with a single and Faith Barth drew a walk, but Johnson retired the next three batters to close out the win.
Johnson (23-6) limited the Eagles to four hits and four walks, striking out nine over the seven shutout innings. Alana Barnard (1-8) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, walking six.
