Eagles Defeat Ragin' Cajuns, 6-1, On Sunday

Georgia Southern moves to 3-1 in Sun Belt play with the win over Louisiana

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis knocked off Louisiana, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon for its third straight Sun Belt Conference win.

The Eagles moved to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the Sun Belt with the win, while Louisiana falls to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern next hits the road next weekend, traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on Southern Miss on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Georgia Southern collected the doubles point against the Ragin' Cajuns with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Eagles then took the first set in all six singles matches.

Ana Tsitavets defeated Lucie Raquin, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2 for the Eagles' first point in singles. Nanaka Kijima quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Angelique Berrat at No. 3 singles, then Silvia Martinez clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Carla Urchoeguia at No. 1 singles.

"It was a really good weekend," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "We really set the tone with our doubles. Today was one of the better days with the girls coming together and playing as a team, rather than just playing singles on a doubles court.  Watching each of the girls setting each other up, that makes a big difference. In singles, it helps when we have 3 or 4 courts get up 3-0 or 5-0 in just 15 or 20 minutes. Before you know it, you're seeing the team gain confidence from that. Credit to Louisiana, they did not just give up - it's one of the few times I've seen a team play even harder when a match had already been decided.

"Silvia is so meticulous about what she does in singles," Coach McCaffrey said. "Ninon also did a really good job, she fought hard. Nanaka is on a tear, I've not seen a freshman do that for quite a wile. And with Ana, it's the same thing - the freshmen are really stepping up for us. Now we'll relax a bit and get ready for Southern Miss and South Alabama this coming weekend."
