Eagles Blank Trojans, 4-0, For First Sun Belt Win

Georgia Southern returns to Wallis for a pair of league matches next weekend

Box Score

TROY, Ala. - Georgia Southern women's tennis notched its first Sun Belt Conference win of the season with a 4-0 victory over host Troy on Saturday afternoon in Troy, Ala.

The Eagles move to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while Troy falls to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt. Georgia Southern returns to action on Saturday, March 25, hosting Texas State in a 10 a.m. Sun Belt contest at the Wallis Tennis Center.

Georgia Southern would collect the doubles point thanks to a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles from Lindsay Tulenko and Ninon Martinache, then a 6-4 win by Silvia Martinez and Liv Ryan at No. 1 doubles.

The Eagles then swept all six first sets in singles. Nanaka Kijima earned a quick 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Valeriia Avdeeva, then Martinache followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maria Guirguis at No. 5 singles.

Martinez then clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kristina Kukaras at No. 1 singles.

"This was, by far, the most complete match I have seen our women play in my entire time here at Georgia Southern," Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "We did not play the most together in doubles, yet we've been learning how to find a way when things aren't going our way. All three of our doubles teams stayed competitive in tough conditions.

"In singles, what helped us a bunch was the three or four matches that began with 3-0 leads. This was exactly what we needed and put a ton of pressure on Troy right from the start. I'm very proud of the squad today. Everything they have been working on in practice and in training is proving to make a big difference and you can tell everyone is truly zeroed in!
