Georgia Southern plays in its first team competition of the spring as the Eagles travel to Gainesville, Florida, for the Vystar Credit Union Gators Invitational with 36 holes Saturday and 18 Sunday. It's the 46th playing of the tournament, and the Eagles are competing in it for the 22nd consecutive season.
Georgia Southern shot the lowest total of the third round to move three places up the leaderboard and finish fourth in the event last season. It was Georgia Southern's best finish at the Gator Invitational since the 1979-80 team won it, and the field featured six teams in the top-50 in the country.
Georgia Southern (-1) finished a stroke behind 25th-ranked South Florida, five clear of Florida Gulf Coast and eight strokes ahead of 23rd-ranked LSU. Ben Carr tied for eighth, Wilson Andress tied for 19th and Mason Williams tied for 24th.
The Eagles kicked off the spring by hosting their annual individual tournament, the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate, at Georgia Southern University Golf Course, last Sunday and Monday. Freshman Parker Claxton shot 9-under to win the event, and Colin Bowles, who is playing as an individual this week, tied for 11th. Hogan Ingram tied for 25th.
Carr (two top-10s) is playing in the Gators Invitaitonal for the fifth time, while Williams (two top-25s) and Andress (one top-20) are playing in the event for the fourth time. Bowles plays in the tournament for the third time.
Carr makes his 46th career start in the lineup, Williams makes his 37th start and Andress will make his 30th appearance in the lineup. Hogan Ingram makes his 17th start, and Claxton is in the lineup for the first time in his collegiate career.
The Eagles are paired with Florida and North Florida for the first two rounds and will tee off the first hole in a modified shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Following the event, Georgia Southern will have three weeks off before competing in the Colleton River Collegiate March 6-7.
