Georgia Southern moves to 1-1 on the season with the victory

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Georgia Southern women's tennis notched its first win of the 2023 Spring season by sweeping Wofford, 7-0, on Sunday at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Eagles move to 1-1 on the season, while Wofford falls to 0-3. Georgia Southern returns to action on Saturday, February 11, visiting South Carolina State for a 1 p.m. contest against the Bulldogs in Orangeburg, S.C.

Georgia Southern picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Eagles then won five of six first sets in singles play.

Freshman Ninon Martinache defeated Emely Kahrs, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4 singles for the Eagles' first singles point. Freshman Ana Tsitavets then defeated Lily Woods, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Senior Paula Hijos picked up a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win over Catherine Blouin at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory.

Junior Silvia Martinez downed Breda Brennan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 singles as the Eagles had three straight-set singles wins on the day. Junior Lindsay Tulenko and freshman Nanaka Kijima completed the sweep by winning third-set 10-point tiebreaks at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

"I felt like we had a good day today," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Any time you have a chance to go on the road, particularly against a strong team like Wofford, you have to be happy coming way with the win. It certainly didn't look like a 7-0 match - they put up a good fight. We showed those moments of resiliency that we've been famous for showing as a team."

"I was pretty happy with No. 1 doubles, with Liv and Sophie, they were on fire. Also happy with our freshmen stepping up and taking their matches the way they did. They all did a great job. And Pauli did a phenomenal job - after her second set got away, it just fueled her to impose her will in the third, which she won 6-0. After the loss against Clemson on Friday, we worked on a few things in practice, and the girls did a good job implementing those things. Now we will take a day to recover and get ready for next week."
