Box Score CLEMSON, S.C. - The Georgia Southern women's tennis squad opened up its dual match schedule on Friday, falling to Clemson by a 7-0 score in Clemson, S.C.
The Tigers move to 6-1 on the season with the win, while the Eagles start the season 0-1. Georgia Southern's scheduled Saturday match at Presbyterian has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues with the Blue Hose program. The Eagles will next be in action on Sunday at Wofford in an 11 am match with the Terriers.
Clemson picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Liv Ryan and Sophie Wagemaker were tied 5-5 with Samantha Buyckx and Jenna Thompson at No. 1 doubles when the point was clinched.
In singles, the Tigers notched wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to clinch the match. All three other matches split sets, and were decided by 10-point tiebreakers in lieu of a third set since the match was already determined.
"I'm not a big fan of moral victories in general," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "However, I am very encouraged by the level of fight and determination the Eagles showed today against an extremely good Clemson team. This was our first match of the Spring and we demonstrated a good deal of grit in so many places during competition. In doubles, we definitely had some missed opportunities early, which had us fighting from behind. We still showed a great deal of perseverance and had our chances. This will be key for us to clean things up for future matches. In singles, we were able to win some key first sets and showed a ton of fight. Even though we were not able to capitalize and finish out the matches, we learned a number of important things that will certainly set us up for the future. We are eager to get back out on the court as soon as possible."
