Eagles Defeat Queens (NC), 6-1, On Saturday

Georgia Southern runs its win streak to six, will face the Royals again on Sunday

Box Score

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern notched a 6-1 win over visiting Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.

The Eagles stretched their current win streak to six with the victory, moving to 6-1 on the young season. Queens (NC) falls to 2-6 on the season with the loss. The two teams will play another match on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at Wallis.

Georgia Southern collected the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sonja Keranen and Silvia Martinez defeated Hanna Axelsson and Jill Morse, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles for the Eagles, while Ninon Martinache and Lindsay Tulenko picked up a 6-1 win over Amelie Allard and Nyanquie Tomegah at No. 3 doubles.

The Eagles then clinched the match with four straight-set singles wins from Silvia Martinez at No. 1 singles, Ninon Martinache at No. 4 singles, Nanaka Kijima at No. 5 singles and Paula Hijos at No. 6 singles. Ana Tsitavets rallied from a first-set deficit to defeat Morse, 3-6, 7-6 (4), (10-8) at No. 2 singles.

"I thought that the team played really well overall today," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Queens is a very young team and has, in my opinion, one of the best young coaches in Alex [Leatu]. They play so hard and with a great amount of energy and fight. I felt doubles was very good, but we still have some things to work out. Paula, Ninon and Nana have been pretty consistent at the back end of the lineup. And it was nice seeing Ana come back in her match. Silvia is proving why she is one of the best with yet another win at the top of the lineup. We look forward to another battle with the Royals tomorrow morning."
