Eagles Notch Fourth Straight Win, Down Jacksonville State 5-2

Georgia Southern picks up the win over the Gamecocks in its first home match of 2023

STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis opened up its 2023 home slate on Tuesday with a 5-2 win over Jacksonville State for the Eagles' fourth win in a row.

The Eagles moved to 4-1 with the win and will return to action on Friday, taking on the College of Charleston at 1:30 p.m. in Charleston, S.C. Jacksonville State falls to 6-2 with the loss.

Georgia Southern picked up the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Liv Ryan and Sophie Wagemaker defeated Irene Artigas and Romane Mosse, 6-2, at the top spot while Silvia Martinez and Sonja Keranen knocked off Polina Ramenskaja and Serafima Shastova, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.

Singles play began with each team notching three first sets. Sophie Wagemaker notched point number two with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dariana Prato at No. 5 singles, then Nanaka Kijima collected a 6-1, 7-5 win over Ramenskaja at No. 4 singles. Paula Hijos then clinched the match with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win over Ella Tuomela  at No. 6 singles. Ninon Martinache capped the Eagles' scoring with a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Anna Syrova at No. 3 singles.

"Today was a very hard-fought match against one of the most improved women's programs in Division I," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "I think that our doubles play set the tone from the start. Liv and Sophie were just about unstoppable and Silvia and Sonja did a very nice job, despite a tiny mid-set letdown.

"In singles, both Sophie and Nanaka did a nice job of taking their matches in straight sets. Ninon did a phenomenal job of wearing out her opponent in three sets, which is a testament to the work that [Georgia Southern strength and conditioning] Coach McKenna does with the team. Paula was clutch and you could see her hitting all out in her third set. I felt her shots were crisper and hit with so much focus. It was great to see the girls going for their shots in some of the more high pressure moments. This will certainly help us down the road."
