Eagles Edge Charleston Southern, 4-3, On Saturday

Georgia Southern overcomes doubles deficit to down Bucs in Charleston

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Georgia Southern women's tennis overcame an early doubles deficit to pick up a 4-3 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon in Charleston, S.C.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 3-1 on the young season, while Charleston Southern falls to 2-4. Georgia Southern wraps up the weekend's action in Charleston on Sunday as the Eagles face the College of Charleston at 10 a.m.

Georgia Southern notched a quick doubles win behind Lindsay Tulenko and Ninon Martinache at No. 3 doubles, but the Buccaneers won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to collect the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead in the match.

In singles, the Eagles quickly took the lead with straight-set wins at No. 4 singles from Nanaka Kijima and No. 5 singles from Paula Hijos. All four of the other matches went to third sets. Sophie Wagemaker collected a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 win at No. 6 singles, then Ninon Martinache delivered the match-winner with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles.

"Today was a really good battle for the Eagles," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Charleston Southern is a very tough team to compete against. I'm particularly proud of how our women found a way to keep their composure, exhibit a degree of resiliency, and dig deep even when things looked like they may not be going their way. It's that relentless attitude that I'm so proud of that gets passed from year to year in this program, and this team has it.

"We had great days in doubles. Sophie and Liv played well even in the loss, and Ninon and Lindsay played amazing. In singles, Sophie really had to work hard to pick up her win. Nana and Pauli really showed a ton of patience as they both methodically picked apart their opponents and simply did not give them opportunities to play their best games. And we are all incredibly proud of Ninon and her clinching the match in a pretty challenging atmosphere, under difficult circumstances. It's tough to be in a position where you know that it all comes down to you. And to earn that result on the road is even more admirable. I'm proud of everyone stepping up today and we look forward to working tomorrow against a very strong College of Charleston team."
