Women's Soccer Claims 2-1 Win At Coastal Carolina Sunday

Eagles get second-half goal from Simone Timm, hold Chants without a shot for 67 minutes to win second straight

CONWAY, S.C. - Georgia Southern women's soccer got a second-half goal from senior Simone Timm in the 72nd minute and held Coastal Carolina without a shot for the final 67 minutes of the match to notch a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over the host Chanticleers on Sunday afternoon in Conway, S.C.

The Eagles improved to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the league with their second straight win, while Coastal Carolina falls to 3-9-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the Sun Belt with the loss. Georgia Southern returns to action on Wednesday, October 11, hosting Georgia State in a 6 p.m. matchup at Eagle Field.

Coastal Carolina struck first in the contest, as Lou Martinet had an initial shot blocked by the Eagles. Georgia Southern's Sade Heinrichs tried to clear the ball out of the box, but her clearance hit off of Martinet and ricocheted back into the net for the goal and a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

Just 42 seconds later, however, the Eagles responded. A free kick from just shy of midfield taken by fifth-year senior Megan Przybysz carried all the way into the box and bounced once, where sophomore Bri Conley headed it into the net for the equalizer in the 24th minute.

The Martinet goal would be the last shot the Eagles would give up for the rest of the afternoon. The score remained tied at 1-1 as the match entered the break, where Georgia Southern enjoyed a 9-3 edge in shots.

The game-winner for the Eagles came from a nice run by fifth-year senior Isabel Kopp down the left side. Her cross into the box was headed down by sophomore Emma Armstrong right to Timm, who finished the point-blank chance for her fourth goal of the season and the 2-1 lead.

Georgia Southern outshot the Chanticleers 8-0 in the second half and finished the match with a 17-3 edge in that category. Michaela Mikko picked up her second win of the season with one save on the day for the Eagles, while Vivienne Carr had three saves for Coastal Carolina. Georgia Southern enjoyed a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, and fouls were 14 apiece for the two teams. The Chanticleers were offsides three times on the day and the Eagles were offsides twice.

"I'm pleased that we found a way to win today on a day where we weren't at our best," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Addams said. "It speaks volumes towards our character to go down a goal and find a way to score twice to get the road win. Now we will have to recover quickly for our Wednesday make-up game against Georgia State. We need Eagle Nation to show up on Wednesday and be our 12th man!"
