Women’s Golf Takes Team Title; Reau Ties for Individual Title at The Southern

Five Eagles finish inside top-20

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern women's golf team claimed its first team title of the 2023-24 season and Louise Reau tied for first place to take home the individual title at The Southern at Savannah Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles shot 299-292-298 (889) to secure the victory by five strokes over Western Kentucky, and Coastal Carolina finished third. Along with Reau, four Eagles finished in the top-20 as Abby Newton and Haley Yerxa tied for ninth, Regina Plascencia finished 17th, and playing as an individual, Avery Robinson finished tied for ninth.

Reau fired a 73-71-75 (219) to finish 3-over par, tying with Coastal Carolina's Hannah Karg. The freshman's victory makes it her second consecutive tournament with a top finish previously claiming the win at the Edisto Island Invitational. Reau led the field in total birdies tallying 15 over three rounds.

Newton held steady for three complete rounds, tying with Yerxa shooting 74-74-75 (223) and 78-72-73 (223), respectively. Yerxa was bogey free on the front nine in round two and on the back nine in the final round of competition. Rounding out the Eagle lineup, Plascencia completed three consistent rounds shooting 74-75-75 (224) and Emma von Hoffmann finished T48.

As individuals, Robinson (70-74-79) sat in second place after the first day of play shooting 2-under par in the first round and a 74 in the second to sit even to finish T9 and sit atop the individual leaderboard. Alex Stevenson finished T21 shooting 76-77-73 (226) firing her best round in the third at 1-over par and was bogey free on the front nine in the first round. Karlee Vardas finished T46 with her best round coming in the second shooting a 74.

It was the second time the Georgia Southern women's golf program hosted a fall event and second time the Eagles hosted an event at Savannah Golf Club. The team won the previous tournament by ten strokes over Yale.

Head Coach Mimi Burke Quotable
"The ladies battled until the finish and ultimately we came out on top. We are very proud of the execution we saw out there - and happy to end the fall season on a high note; even more so at our home event. Savannah Golf Club is a tough test of discipline and short game; because of that we know what we need to dial in during the off season to come back even stronger in the spring."
