NORFOLK, Va. - Georgia Southern rallied from a 1-0 deficit on the road against the Old Dominion Monarchs with
Jacob Sandun scoring two goals in less than six minutes to come away with a huge Sun Belt Conference victory, 2-1.
The Monarchs (5-4-5, 2-4-1 SBC) got on the board in the second minute of the match, putting the Eagles (2-7-6, 1-3-3 SBC) down early to kick off the night. The rest of the first half went by without much more action, but the Eagles outshot the Monarchs 5-4 in the first 45 minutes of play.
Sandun's goal in the 73rd minute, scored off of a cross from
Ty Wilson who earned his first collegiate save with the cross, served as the equalizer in the match, tying the match up with 16 minutes left to play. In the 79th minute, Sandun streaked down the attacking zone and launched a shot into the upper half of the net, sending the ball past ODU defenders in the box and the keeper to take the 2-1 lead on the night. Both sides pushed in the final 10 minutes of action, but the Eagles walked away with a 2-1 win and three points in the Sun Belt standings.
Sunday's victory represents the first conference victory for Georgia Southern since 2019, when the Eagles knocked off Appalachian State on Senior Day in Statesboro. The Eagles snap a 27-match conference winless skid with the victory.
As of the time of writing, Georgia Southern and Kentucky are currently tied for eighth in the conference standings with six points each after GS's victory over ODU and Kentucky's victory over top-ranked Marshall. Coastal Carolina currently sits in 10th place in the standings with five points and trails fifth-ranked West Virginia. The Sun Belt Conference Championship takes the top eight teams in the conference, with the top two teams hosting the quarter and semi-finals, and the finals being hosted at the highest-remaining seed.
