Volleyball Wins Tussle in the Triad

The Eagles sweep UNCG for their fifth straight victory.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Southern middles Baylor Bumford and Grace Underwood combined for 16 kills and just one hitting error to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-10) volleyball win over UNCG at the Tussle in the Triad Saturday afternoon in Fleming Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Eagles win the Tussle in the Triad and have won their last five matches and 15 consecutive sets. Junior setter Callaway Cason was named the tournament MVP after averaging 10 assists and 1.4 digs a set, while sophomores Paige Powers and Ashlyn Lovett joined her on the all-tournament squad.

Eagles of the Match 
Underwood had nine kills on 13 swings with just one error, and Bumford posted seven kills on 14 swings and tallied three blocks. Powers posted nine kills, and Robin Rosser added six.

Key Moments
Leading 19-16 in the second set, the Eagles scored six of the next seven points to win the set and take control of the match. Emily Jarome was in on two blocks and finished the set with an ace, while Bumford and Powers each put down a kill. GS scored 10 straight points in the third to open a commanding 20-8 lead.

Stats of the Match
The Eagles hit a season-high .386 in the match, and the GS middles combined to hit .556.

We had great execution all the way around and credit to our team for being dialed in and creating lots of energy. Good momentum for our group to build on heading into a really competitive weekend coming up."

Next Up
The Eagles travel to Gainesville, Florida, to compete in the Sunshine Invitational next weekend. GS takes on No. 13 Florida Friday morning and VCU Friday evening. The Eagles cap the tournament by facing FGCU Saturday at 1 p.m.
