Georgia Southern returns to action at the Mason Rudolph Championship presented by Simmons Bank this weekend. It's the Eagles' first time playing in the event. The field features six teams in the latest Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll in LSU (8), Auburn (13), Alabama (17), Georgia (19), Arizona (23), Kentucky (25) while host Vanderbilt, Ohio State and Mississippi State are receiving votes.
GS is coming off a third-place finish at the Yale Invitational Sept. 11, the first event of the season for the Eagles. Abby Newton shot 71-70-70=211 to finish 2-under for the tournament and place third. Sarunchana Rattanasin tied for 16th after shooting 72-75-72=219, and Karlee Vardas shot 70-74-76=220 to tie for 19th. The Eagles led the tournament in par-3 and par-5 scoring.
Defending Champions of the Sun Belt Conference, the Eagles return five letterwinners from last year's team, including first-team All-Sun Belt selections Rattanasin and Newton. The Eagles led the Sun Belt Championship wire to wire and topped defending champion Coastal Carolina by four strokes at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida. Rattanasin earned medalist honors and Newton tied for 11th. Georgia Southern went on to place seventh at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where Newton tied for 12th and finished just two strokes out of an individual bid to the NCAA Finals.
Newton makes her 21st start in the lineup for the Eagles, while Rattanasin will be playing in the lineup for the 13th time. Karlee Vardas makes her third start in the lineup and Meiqi Gao, who subbed in the Sun Belt Championship last season, makes her first second in the lineup. Haley Yerxa, a transfer from FGCU, makes her debut for the Eagles.
GS is paired with Chattanooga and LSU for Friday's first round and will tee off the 10th hole at 10:45 a.m. ET.
