Eagles will play three Fall events and a challenging non-conference slate to prepare for a bolstered Sun Belt Conference
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis has announced its Fall and Spring schedule for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Head Coach Sean McCaffrey and the Eagles will play three Fall events, with the Spring schedule opening up on January 25 with a trip to South Carolina State.
"It's safe to say that everyone involved with our program is incredibly excited and optimistic about this upcoming year," Coach McCaffrey said. "Whether it's our recently completed team-building trip to the US Open in New York, our continued involvement in various community service projects or doing our absolute best in the classroom, the level of excitement amongst everyone is contagious."
The Fall portion of the schedule begins on September 30 with the three-day Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Ga. The Eagles will then host the GS Shootout from October 7-9 at the Wallis Tennis Center, then the Fall wraps up with Georgia Southern traveling to Atlanta, Ga., for the iTA Regionals hosted by Georgia Tech on October 13-16.
"This Fall, we opted to focus on team building and player development," Coach McCaffrey said. "Rather than travel each and every weekend for competition, we made the conscious decision to keep the team together, so that we spend as much time as possible strengthening our bond, and recognizing what it means to be an Eagle women's tennis player. We have filled our agenda with many opportunities for everyone to grow as a tennis player, a student, a teammate, a servant and a leader. From our student-athletes to our coaches and support staff, we recognize that it takes a village to help foster a positive and healthy dynamic environment in order to attain success, and our goal is to involve everyone. So far, it is paying dividends."
The Spring slate begins in January, as the Eagles will take a preseason trip to the USTA National Campus in Orlando before opening up the dual match season at South Carolina State on January 25. The Eagles will return to the state of South Carolina to play at Clemson (February 3), Presbyterian (February 4) and Wofford (February 5) before opening up its home campaign on February 12 by hosting Jacksonville State.
The Eagles visit Charleston, S.C., on February 18 taking on Charleston Southern and on February 19 taking on the College of Charleston. Georgia Southern then hosts Bellarmine on February 25 and Mercer on February 26 to wrap up the month.
March begins with a home match against North Florida on the first, then the Eagles will travel to Florida A&M on March 4 before wrapping up its non-conference schedule with a home match against Davidson on March 5. The Eagles open up Sun Belt play on March 11 at Coastal Carolina, then visit Troy on March 18.
The first home weekend of Sun Belt action sees the Eagles host Texas State on March 25 and Louisiana on March 26. A four-game road swing sees the Eagles open April at South Alabama on the first, new conference foe Southern Miss on April 2, UL Monroe on April 7 and Arkansas State on April 9. Georgia Southern then wraps up the regular season with three home matches, against James Madison (April 14), Old Dominion (April 16) and Georgia State (April 22). The 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championships will once again be held in Peachtree City, Ga., on April 26-29.
"In the Spring, we will begin with a training camp prior to classes beginning in early January at the USTA National Campus in Orlando," Coach McCaffrey said. "After this, we have a very challenging and competitive non-conference schedule, to prepare us for what is now an even more grueling set of matches in the Sun Belt Conference. With four new programs being added, all of them extremely solid, we will focus on strengthening ourselves and improving a little each day, so that we are beginning to peak in time for the conference schedule. We are fortunate to have the support of everyone in the athletic department as we face all of these opportunities where we can develop and improve. We will work hard to continue to build on the success we have had over the years, as well as making all of Eagle Nation proud."
