TROY, Ala. - Georgia Southern opened up Sun Belt Conference play by playing Troy to a 0-0 draw to earn a point on the road on Sunday afternoon in Troy, Ala.
The Eagles move to 1-2-4 overall and 0-0-1 in the Sun Belt with the draw, while Troy moves to 2-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the league. Georgia Southern will return home for the first time in nearly a month on Thursday, hosting Texas State in a 7 p.m. Sun Belt match from Eagle Field.
The match saw very few quality scoring opportunities from both teams, especially in the first half, where the Eagles' lone shot came from redshirt freshman Kyleigh Drew in the 42nd minute.
In the second half, the Eagles' best chance to take the victory came in in the 80th minute. A throw-in from the right side found Drew at the edge of the box, and her turnaround shot clanged off the crossbar. The ball rebounded back into the box but the Eagles could not get onto the loose ball.
Freshman goalkeeper Michaela Mikko - in her first collegiate start - then preserved her first collegiate shutout with a pair of saves in the final two minutes. Mikko would make five saves on the day to notch the shutout, the second for Georgia Southern this season.
"We are playing well defensively, and just struggling to score goals right now," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "I'm not going to make excuses for us not getting it done, but our lack of experience is proving to be a huge challenge. We just haven't put it all together recently and we should be performing at a higher level after the number of matches we have played. We will go back to work, get better and prepare for a very good Texas State team at home this Thursday."
Troy finished the day with a 12-7 edge in shots. The Trojans had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, and both teams were whistled for offsides five times on the day.
