STATESBORO - As game week draws closer, GSEagles.com had a chance to sit down with each coordinator to get their thoughts on their areas. Up next is offensive coordinator
Bryan Ellis.
What's one group or area you've been pleasantly surprised with this preseason?
The wide outs have made plays for the most part and been unselfish on the perimeter with their blocking.
What aspect is still something you have to work on to be ready for the season?
We have to get the offensive line gelled. The first thing we have to do is figure out who the five guys who will run out there for the first snap against Morgan State are and then get those five guys working together as well as we can.
Who are a few veterans who have stood out this preseason and why?
I'll start with
Kyle Vantrease, who has continued to work hard to master the offense. He's the leader of the offense and I'm excited to watch him this year.
Jeremy Singleton continues to make plays. Even when the ball isn't thrown to him, he seems to be consistently open, which is a great quality of a wide out.
Amare Jones is phenomenal with the ball in his hands and does a job once he catches it. He's probably also our best perimeter blocker.
Khalil Crowder has been the most consistent guy on the offensive line. Day-in and day-out, he most consistently does things the right way.
Beau Johnson has blocked really well and has done a really good job at becoming a willing blocker. He understands the technique and how to get it done.
Jjay Mcafee in moving to tight end, has really taken ownership of learning the position and is doing a nice job. He's going to be a really good player for us.
What newcomers should Eagle Nation keep their eyes on this season who have stood out this preseason?
Two of the freshmen,
Marcus Sanders Jr. and
OJ Arnold, are going to be really, really good football players at some point this season. It may not be the first game, but I think by the time we get to the middle of the season, they're going to really help us. Marcus makes plays when it's his turn. Omari has a knack for finding the holes and when you put the ball in hands, he has a natural feel for things.
What has you excited about your area this season?
I'll say the same thing that I said the first day I walked in. I think it's exciting to come coach these guys every day because they want to be coaches, they want to win and they want to get better. They all have great attitudes. I've yet to be around a group of players like this one that worked as hard as they did and didn't to enjoy the fruits of their labor. It's a joy to go out there every day with them.
