Eagles Take Two Draws in Exhibition Action

Georgia Southern will play two more exhibition matches on Friday, August 19

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team earned a pair of 2-2 draws in exhibition matches against Georgia Southwestern at Eagle Creek and  at Erk Russell Park on Sunday, August 14.

The first match of the day was played on the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek, where the Hurricanes of GSW took a quick 2-0 lead, but Georgia Southern fought back with a goal in the closing minutes of the first half and another goal during the second half of action to tie up the match.

In the nightcap, spectators were treated to an Eagles vs. Eagles matchup at Erk Russell Park. Georgia Southern scored first to take a 1-0 lead over WU, but WU answered with a goal late in the first half to tie the match at halftime. In the second half, Winthrop stuck first to take a 2-1 lead, but the Eagles scored in the 69th minute to tie up the match. Both squads had chances late, but the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

"I'm pleased overall," head coach John Murphy said about the day. "I think the goal that we're looking for on a day like today is to get out healthy, which I feel like we did have overall."

"We have most of the group that's played anywhere between 45 and 70 minutes, which is fantastic," Murphy said on the way the teams were split up for the two matches. "Usually you have a core group of guys that's going for 60 minutes, and then you have another 15 guys that you are playing for five to 15 minutes."

The Eagles will fly north on Friday, August 19, to take part in two more exhibition matches before the season opener on August 25 against Presbyterian. The first match will be at Truett McConnell at 2 p.m., followed by a matchup against North Georgia at 7 p.m.
