Men's soccer pens five student-athletes from the Peach State
STATESBORO - Five new in-state players have signed to play men's soccer at Georgia Southern starting in the fall, GS men's soccer head coach John Murphy announced today.
NATE MARTINEZ | GOALKEEPER | ATLANTA, GA
Nate Martinez played for Concorde Fire Soccer Club under head coach Jeff Newbury. He was a captain of the team during his time. While playing soccer, he was also a cross country athlete and was named 2019 GISA Cross Country All-State. Martinez is a Georgia Certificate of Merit Scholar.
QUOTE FROM COACH MURPHY: "Nate is an exciting goalkeeper prospect. He has a balanced skill set, outstanding physical qualities, but I personally feel it is his competitive nature combined with calmness that really makes him stand out as a young goalkeeper. He will fit in very well in our system as he has the ability to not only organize the back line, but can spring us into attack as he is a strong kicker of the ball."
THADDEUS HARP | RIGHT BACK/LEFT BACK | CUMMING, GA
Thaddeus Harp played and lettered all four years at West Forsyth High School in Cumming, Ga., playing under head coach Kelly Morawsky. He scored one goal and recorded two assists his senior season. He also played for NASA Tophat under head coach Todd Gispert. In 2020, NASA Tophat was the Southeast Division Champions for Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the national tournament.
QUOTE FROM COACH MURPHY: "Thad is a versatile and intelligent player who can be deployed in multiple positions within our system. We feel he has an excellent balance of technique, tactical sense and competitive nature. His upside is quite high and I believe he has the capacity to eventually be a top player at this level."
ANGEL SAGRERO | LEFT BACK/CENTER MID | GAINESVILLE, GA
Angel Sagrero played and lettered all four years at Johnson High School in Gainesville, Ga., playing under head coach Frank Zamora. He was named to the 5A Region 8 First Team and was named Midfielder of the Year. Johnson High School is currently 20-1-1 and is preparing to play St. Pius X for the 5A GHSA State Championship on May 5. He also played for the United Futbol Academy.
QUOTE FROM COACH MURPHY: "Angel is a left footed attacking player that can be deployed in the back line, in the centre of midfield, or in wide areas. He is technical, quite intelligent, and has a very strong tactical sense. We feel that Angel can step in and provide us with a left footed option in several positions."
ZACHARY MARTIN | FORWARD | ATLANTA, GA
Zachary Martin played for three years at Lakeside High School in Atlanta, Ga., under head coach Merck Smith, lettering in two of those years. Lakeside High School was a two-time region champion during Martin's playing time, and he was named MVP for 2020, 2021, and 2022, as well as Region Player of the Year in 2020 and 2021. He owns the LHS record for most goals in a single season with 44. His senior season, he scored 31 goals and tallied 12 assists. He also played at NASA Tophat under Todd Gispert, where they were two-time Southeast Division Champions. He recorded 12 goals and six assists with NASA NTH.
QUOTE FROM COACH MURPHY: "Zach is a classic center forward who has the ability to not only hold the ball up to bring others into the attack, but has the pace to spin out and run in behind. This balanced threat translates well to the college game, where his strong physique and solid technique will help him as he makes the transition to Division I."
DAGOBERTO ROMERO | GOALKEEPER | LAWRENCEVILLE, GA
Dago Romero played for two years at Central Gwinnett High School, where he played under head coach Mike McLean. CGHS won the 6A Region 8 championship this season, and went 20-1-1, advancing all the way to the State Semifinals against Lassiter. Romero is also a product of the Atlanta United Academy, where he played under head coach Lewis Sharpe.
QUOTE FROM COACH MURPHY: "Dago comes from the Atlanta United youth system, and has been a standout goalkeeper for this club for several years. He has been brought in to train with their reserve professional group multiple times, and this has helped him stand out at the U18 and U20 levels. His calmness, tactical sense, and strong positioning are strengths that will help him take the next step."
