Eagles play six teams that were in the postseason last season
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team has announced their Fall 2022 schedule, per Georgia Southern head coach John Murphy.
"We are excited to be part of this revamped version of the Sun Belt Men's Soccer conference this fall as well as a very challenging non-league slate" said head coach John Murphy. "Our program strives to play the best schedule possible, and this season will be no exception. We look forward to the support that Eagle Nation will provide Statesboro as well as throughout our travels throughout the Southeast."
Georgia Southern is no stranger to playing difficult schedules, boasting the 55th-ranked strength of schedule last year and facing off against ten teams that were in the NCAA Tournament (Akron, Bowling Green, Campbell, Charlotte, Clemson, Georgia State, Mercer, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, and West Virginia). The upcoming season's schedule will see the Eagles competing against some of the best teams in the southeast to prepare for the re-formed Sun Belt Conference.
The Eagles will play two exhibition matches like last season, one against Winthrop at home and one on the road against North Georgia. Last year, the Eagles notched preseason victories against both squads, winning both matches 2-1.
The season will officially kick off on August 25, when the Eagles visit the Presbyterian Blue Hose in a rematch of last season's opener. The Eagles won that match 1-0, and currently hold a 6-3-1 all-time advantage against the Blue Hose. The road trip will continue with a game against UNC-Asheville in Asheville, NC.
Georgia Southern's home opener will be against Charlotte, a team who was in the NCAA tournament last season, on September 4. Last year was the first time ever the two squads faced off, which ended in a 3-1 Charlotte win on the road. The Eagles will play another home match five days later against Florida Gulf Coast before beginning conference play.
GS opens up Sun Belt Conference play against Old Dominion on September 17, a team that GS has only played once, a match that ended in a 2-2 tie in 2018. The Eagles will then take a break from conference play to compete at Jacksonville before going back to face the South Carolina Gamecocks on the road, then finally finishing the three-match road trip with a match against Mercer in Macon, Ga.
Georgia Southern will take on rival Georgia State at home on October 1 before heading south one last time, facing Stetson in DeLand, Fla. The Eagles will then end the season with five straight conference matches between October 8 and November 1, playing Kentucky, James Madison, 2020 National Champion Marshall, West Virginia, and finishing off with Coastal Carolina before the SBC Championship the following week.
