Eagles use a pair of nine-run innings to sweep I-16 foe
The Eagles got on the board first with an Austin Thompson two-RBI double, bringing Jesse Sherrill and Christian Avant home to give Georgia Southern (35-17) a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Mercer (38-14) would answer with a run of its own in the top of the second inning, but the Eagles would hold a 2-1 lead until the top of the fifth inning.
The top of the fifth inning saw Mercer plate four runs to take a 5-2 lead over Georgia Southern, but the Eagles would fight back with a nine-run bottom of the sixth inning, kickstarted by a Sherrill RBI-double down the left field line, plating Parker Biederer to cut the deficit to two runs. Jason Swan would tie the game with a two-RBI double to left-center field, scoring JP Tighe and Sherrill, and an Avant RBI-single would bring home Swan and give the Eagles the lead, 6-5. To cap off the nine-run inning, Tighe would score Biederer on a checked swing, sending the ball to right field and giving the Eagles a 11-5 lead after six innings.
The Eagles would continue their rampant scoring with one in the bottom of the seventh inning and nine more in the bottom of the eighth inning, including back-to-back runs scored from wild pitches, a sac fly from Sam Blancato to score Brown, and the final Eagle run coming from a passed ball to set the Eagles with the 21-5 advantage. Mercer would score two in the top of the ninth inning, but the Eagles held on for the decisive 21-7 win.
Danny Madden collected his second win of the season, facing six batters and not allowing a single hit or walk and striking out one.
