LAFAYETTE, La. – The Georgia Southern baseball team fell to Louisiana in the rubber match of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon. It's the first Sun Belt conference series the Eagles have dropped this season.
The bats on both sides were quiet until the top of the fifth inning, when Georgia Southern (18-10, 6-3 SBC) shortstop
Austin Thompson hit a solo home run to left field, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead after the top half of the frame.
However, the Ragin' Cajuns (14-13, 4-5 SBC) would score five unanswered runs, with three in the bottom of the fifth inning and two in the bottom of the sixth inning to build a four-run lead over the Eagles, setting the score at 5-1 after six.
The closest the Eagles got to climbing back into the game came in the top of the eighth, where
Jesse Sherrill was hit by a pitch and
Jason Swan was walked to set up the Eagles with runners on first and second with two outs. On the next at-bat,
Christian Avant's fly-out to left field ended the inning.
