STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis sophomore Silvia Martinez Jimenez earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference singles honors on Thursday, announced by league officials prior to the commencement of the 2022 Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championships.
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Martinez Jimenez joined the Eagles after playing her freshman season at Ball State in 2021. After playing primarily No. 6 singles for the Cardinals, Martinez Jimenez has ascended to the top singles spot for Georgia Southern after beginning the year at the No. 4 position and has fashioned a 12-6 singles record this Spring. She is 4-3 in singles play in Sun Belt Conference matches and is 6-3 at No. 1 singles for the Eagles. All 12 of her singles wins this Spring have been in straight sets.
Martinez Jimenez is the second straight first-team All-Conference singles player for the Eagles, and Georgia Southern has back-to-back first-team All-Conference singles players for the first time since Isabella King was a first-team All-Conference honoree from the SoCon three straight years, from 1999-2001.
The Eagles open up defense of its Sun Belt Conference tournament title at 2 p.m. on Thursday, taking on No. 10-seed Louisiana in Peachtree City, Ga.
