Eagles Fall At No. 68 UTA, 4-0, On Saturday

Georgia Southern wraps up its Texas trip by playing Texas State on Sunday

ARLINGTON, Texas - No. 68 UT Arlington women's tennis remained unbeaten in Sun Belt conference play with a 4-0 victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Saturday in Arlington.

UTA moved to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in the league with the victory, while Georgia Southern fell to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the league. The Eagles will wrap up their weekend Sun Belt trip to Texas by taking on Texas State on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Mavericks took the doubles point by picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. As singles play began, each team took three first sets of the six singles matches. UTA, however, would clinch the match by securing straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

"UTA showed why they are the team to beat in the Sun Belt this year," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "They did a great job of staying steady throughout the match. UTA plays on a much faster surface than we are used to and they absolutely used that to their advantage. They crafted their points well and showed great discipline in earning a hard-fought win.

"I believe we have a number of good things we can take away from today," McCaffrey said. "We had a very good start in doubles, as well as in singles with Sophie, Silvy and Pauli all collecting first set wins, and I believe we had opportunities to take a few of those matches. However, we allowed some of our 'free points' to slip away a little too frequently. That is something we will work on in the coming days. When you play against such strong teams, the margin for error is so very small that it will be a factor in winning or losing. We will continue to work on this as we get back out on the courts tomorrow and look to rebound at Texas State."
