MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. - Georgia Southern continued action in the Spring Games @ Madeira Beach on Saturday, splitting a pair of contests at ROC Park.
The Eagles (5-9) defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, in the first game of the day, but fell to Southern Miss, 4-1, in the second game. Georgia Southern will wrap up action in the Spring Games by taking on Nebraska-Omaha at 11:30 a.m. and Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m. on Sunday
GAME ONE: Georgia Southern 1, Rhode Island 0
Janai Conklin drove in the winning run with a fourth-inning double, while Rylee Waldrep spun a three-hit shutout to lead the Eagles past URi, 1-0, in Saturday's first game.
Waldrep gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter, striking out two to improve to 3-1 on the season. She allowed just three singles and retired the final 11 batters of the contest for her third career shutout.
All the offense came in the fourth as Aniston Johnson reached on a two-out single to right. Conklin then followed with an RBI double to right center to score Johnson with the lone run of the game.
Conklin finished the game 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Eagles offensively.
GAME TWO: Southern Miss 8, Georgia Southern 1
The Golden Eagles launched a pair of two-run home runs in the third inning to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and collect the win over Georgia Southern in Saturday's second game.
Jess Mazur got Georgia Southern started off with a solo home run to center field in the first. But Destini Brown and Hannah Borden each clocked two-run shots in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-1.
The Golden Eagles added three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, then capped off the scoring with a single run in the fifth.
Kyleigh Richardson (1-3) takes the loss for the Eagles in the circle, giving up four runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Jess Mazur's two hits and home run led Georgia Southern in the game offensively.
