Eagles Fall at UGA, 7-2

ATHENS, Ga. – A three-run homer by Cole Wagner in the bottom of the seventh inning helped power Georgia (19-6) past Georgia Southern (17-8), 7-2 on Tuesday night at Foley Field. UGA clinched the season series with the win.

The Bulldogs got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases. A Jesse Sherrill fielding error allowed one runner to reach home, and a UGA single allowed a second runner to score before a pop-fly ended the inning, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

Neither team had much going until the top of the fourth inning, when Kyler Hultgren cranked his first Division I home run to left field, getting the Eagles on the board and cutting the Bulldogs' lead to only one run. The Eagles would threaten with the bases loaded, but a fly out to right field ended the inning without any more runs scored.

The Bulldogs would respond in the bottom of the fourth inning as Cole Tate would produce an RBI groundout to the shortstop, extending their lead to 3-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, a Sherrill walk and Jason Swan double would put Eagle runners on second and third. Christian Avant would ground out to shortstop, but plate Sherrill in the process, narrowing the UGA lead to only 3-2.

UGA would again respond after the Eagles scored, first with Connor Tate plating Cole Tate and giving the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. On the first pitch, Cole Wagner swung and hit a three-run home run barely inside the right field foul pole, setting up UGA with the 7-2 lead before Jake Martin struck out two, with the last out coming from a ground out to Jarrett Brown. Neither team would score in the final two frames of the game, with Georgia walking away with the 7-2 win.
