CONWAY, SC - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell in the final game of the regular season, 4-1, to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Tuesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium. The loss ends the Eagles' season, who will finish 1-14-1 on the 2022 season.
The Chanticleers (5-4-6) wasted no time getting on the board as they scored two goals in the third and fourth minutes of the match to quickly take a 2-0 lead. In the fifth minute,
Hilary Odhiambo answered with a header off of a
Angel Sagrero free-kick to get the Eagles on the board and cut the two-goal deficit in half, trailing 2-1. Neither team would score for the remainder of the first half.
In the second half, the Chanticleers scored in the 74' and 76' to double the lead to 4-1, where it would stay and become the final of the match.
"First and foremost, I want to thank our seniors," said head coach
John Murphy. "All four of them had substantial roles in tonight's game and during their time on campus.
Maverick Boring in goal was outstanding, while
Chase Winters played like captain for us all season.
Jona Kafka and
Thomas Jackson gave us great energy tonight particularly when we were down to ten players. Overall, these four have been exceptional student-athletes, which is what I'm most proud of."
"Despite being down a man for most of the game, you would not know that was the case," continued Murphy. "For most of it, we used the ball very well and created good chances in the attack. Allowing a goal three minutes in is not ideal, and that's a sign of a young team. Furthermore, conceding the second goal so quickly is a collective lapse in concentration. After that, we settled in, scored a very good goal, and up until the red card had a solid grip of the game. The red card was a difficult one to take, but we handled it very well and took it to them with ten men. Late in the game, we got tired and they wore us down. The two goals were scored in another short sequence that exposed our fatigue. Overall, we have taken some tough lessons this season. But I told the boys post game that we will look back on this season from a higher plane in 2023."
