STATESBORO - Georgia Southern tallied a pair of first-half goals to notch a 2-0 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer win over visiting Appalachian State on Senior Day, Sunday at Eagle Field.
The win pushed the Eagles (4-3-5, 3-1-2 SBC) above .500 for the year but more importantly, picked up three more points in the Sun Belt standings. Appalachian State fell to 3-7-4, 2-4 in the Sun Belt. The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, October 16, hosting Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m.
Freshman Carley Borgelt got the scoring started for the Eagles as her shot from long range, off of a layoff by senior Isabel Kopp, took a deflection off of an App State defender into the net in just the eighth minute of the match. It was Borgelt's first collegiate goal and she becomes the fourth different Eagle to notch their first collegiate goal this season.
The Eagles would double up that lead in the 30th minute. Freshman Emma Armstrong's long service from the left side found redshirt sophomore Elis Nemtsov on the far post, and Nemtsov volleyed in the service for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The shot totals were tied at six apiece at halftime. In the second half, the Eagles kept the pressure up, outshooting the Mountaineers by an 8-4 tally and forcing App State goalkeeper Kerry Eagleston to make five first-half saves. The match finished with the Eagles notching their third shutout in their last four matches.
Prior to the match, the Eagles honored three seniors - midfielder Olivia Durham and forwards Karin Winka and Alejandra Gracia - in their Senior Day match.
"With senior day here at home, there's a certain script you hope happens on that day," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "And we were able to follow it. We scored early, something we have not been able to do all year. A couple of first-half goals gave us a margin for error. And I was particularly pleased with the players off the bench. I thought we were able to bring on fresh legs and the level of play did not drop off at all. And finally, I'm proud of our seniors who represent us very well in the classroom, on and of the field. It was nice to give them a chance to go out and impact the game. Now we'll look to get on a roll here - we have a week to prepare for Coastal and we hope to keep the winning streak alive."
Georgia Southern finished the match with a 14-10 edge in shots. Katie Oakley made five saves for her third shutout of the season for the Eagles, while Eagleston finished the match with six saves for the Mountaineers. App State had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks, and the Mountaineers were whistled for seven fouls on the day, while the Eagles were whistled for nine fouls and three offsides.
