Georgia Southern returns to action at the Edisto Island Invitational. It's the second straight season the Eagles have competed in the event. Three Eagles placed in the top-10, and Georgia Southern shot two of the lowest rounds in school history to earn a second-place finish last season. The Eagles shot a school-record 284 in the second round and then topped it with a 4-under-par 280 on their final 18.
Sarunchana Rattanasin matched the second-lowest round of the tournament with a 68 in the final round and took fourth. Abby Newton tied for eighth, and Alex Stevenson tied for 17th. The trio will be in the lineup again this week.
Defending Champions of the Sun Belt Conference, the Eagles return five letterwinners from last year's team, including first-team All-Sun Belt selections Rattanasin and Newton. The Eagles led the Sun Belt Championship wire to wire and topped defending champion Coastal Carolina by four strokes at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Florida. Rattanasin earned medalist honors and Newton tied for 11th. Georgia Southern went on to place seventh at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where Newton tied for 12th and finished just two strokes out of an individual bid to the NCAA Finals.
Newton makes her 22nd start in the lineup for the Eagles, while Rattanasin will be playing in the lineup for the 14th time. Karlee Vardas makes her fourth start in the lineup and Alex Stevenson makes her 10th career start. Haley Yerxa, a transfer from FGCU, is in the lineup for the second straight event.
