SUN BELT CHAMPS! Eagles Claim First Program Title With 1-0 Win At Georgia State

Elis Nemtsov's goal in the 86th minute is the match winner as Georgia Southern wins the title

ATLANTA, Ga. - Elis Nemtsov's volley off of a Megan Przybysz free kick in the 86th minute delivered Georgia Southern women's soccer's first regular season conference championship in program history as the Eagles captured the 2022 Sun Belt Conference title with a 1-0 victory over Georgia State on Thursday evening at the GSU Soccer Complex.

Georgia Southern ends the regular season having shut out its opponents in six straight contests and will take a 546 minute and 58 second scoreless streak into the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Championships as the No. 1 seed when the Eagles begin action in the tournament on Wednesday, November 2nd. The Eagles finish the 2022 regular season at 8-3-5 overall and 7-1-2 in the Sun Belt.

"This win is super important for our program," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "I'm incredibly proud of our team. Early on, we were a little inconsistent. But with our sixth shutout in a row, I couldn't be more proud of our group for their resilience. In a hostile environemnt, with a lot of pressure to get the result to be the champions, I'm super proud we found a way to deliver the championship for this program."

The first half saw Georgia State have a golden chance right off the opening kick, but freshman goalkeeper Katie Oakley made a kick save on the shot by Alondra Nieves to stop the chance. Georgia Southern did not record its first shot until the 26th minute and as the match entered halftime scoreless, Georgia State held a slim 4-3 edge in shots.

The match's lone goal came off of a set piece in the 86th minute. A foul drawn by the Eagles on the left side set up the free kick, which was delivered into the box by Przybysz. It found the foot of Nemtsov even with the far post and Nemtsov volleyed the shot inside the post for her seventh goal of the season and her sixth goal in the last eight matches for the 1-0 lead. It was the only shot for the Eagles in the second half.

Georgia Southern saw out the final five minutes to claim the program's first regular season conference championship since the inception of the program in 1993.

Georgia State held a 14-4 edge in shots on the evening. Freshman Katie Oakley made four saves for her seventh shutout of the season. Each team had three corner kicks on the evening and the foul count was even at 14 fouls apiece.

The Eagles will open up Sun Belt Conference tournament action on Wednesday, November 2, facing the winner of Georgia State and Southern Miss at 5 PM in Foley, Ala.
