Eagles Collect Fourth Straight Shutout Win, Down ULM 1-0

Ellie McIntyre's goal in the 17th minute is the difference as Georgia Southern moves to 5-1-2 in Sun Belt play

MONROE, La. - Ellie McIntyre's volley in the 17th minute proved to be the difference in Georgia Southern's 1-0 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer victory over host UL Monroe on Thursday evening from Monroe, La.

The Eagles (6-3-5, 5-1-2 SBC) won their fourth straight league match in shutout fashion, while ULM falls to 10-5-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the league. Georgia Southern's fourth straight shutout is the longest such shutout streak for the Eagles since the 2000 season.

The game's only goal came in the 17th minute as a ball from sophomore Smith Cathey found McIntyre just inside the box. She chested down the high ball and volleyed it inside the near post for her second goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles held a 6-3 edge in shots in the first half.

The Warhawks pushed for the equalizer throughout the second half, outshooting the Eagles by a 13-7 margin after the break. ULM nearly pulled off the draw with 16 seconds left as a free kick was headed in, but the offsides flag was up on the play, nullifying the equalizer.

Katie Oakley made four saves in net to notch the shutout for the Eagles in net, her fifth of the season. ULM finished the match with a 16-13 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Georgia Southern was whistled for nine fouls and one offsides, with the Warhawks committing five fouls and a pair of offsides.

"I'm proud of the team for getting our fourth straight win," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "And another shutout win is fantastic. On a day where ULM was backed into a corner and needed points, all credit to them. They played in a different fashion and it took a while for us to figure it out. But we stuck together as a team and were able to pitch a shutout, on the road, against a very technical squad that moved the ball well and made life very difficult for us."

Georgia Southern plays its final home match of the 2022 regular season on Sunday, hosting James Madison in a 1 p.m. Sun Belt contest at Eagle Field.
