STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell at Eagle Field to Georgia State by a score of 4-2 on Saturday, October 1. The Eagles fall to 1-9-0 on the season while GAST moves to 7-2-1.
Georgia State got on the board first with a score in the first minute of play, but the Eagles tied up the match in the 22' with an acrobatic goal from
Alex Smith, assisted by
Angel Sagrero.Â
Georgia Southern took a 2-1Â lead in the 53' minute of the match with a
Samuel Odame kick to the top of the goal, assisted by
Jack Ireland. However, the Panthers would tie the match in the next minute, and then score two unanswered goals to take the 4-2 decision.
"It was disappointing to lose this game in the manner we did," said head coach
John Murphy. "There were some really great moments from us, and some fluidity to show what we're capable of doing, but the lack of consistency and concentration was what hurt us in key moments of the game. We need to find ways to work through these difficult moments without conceding, but at this moment that's something of a challenge."
"I feel confident that we're growing as a group, and if anyone was at this game tonight, they would see there wasn't much between these two teams, and that's a team that was in the NCAA Tournament last year. We're all disappointed, but we still have plenty of games to play. We have to get our heads down and have a really good week before we head to Lexington, Kentucky."
