CLEMSON, S.C. - The Georgia Southern women's tennis squad opened up its dual match schedule on Saturday, falling to No. 73 Clemson by a 7-0 score in Clemson, S.C.
The Tigers improve to 4-0 on the season with the win, while the Eagles start the season 0-1. The road doesn't get any easier for Georgia Southern as it will next travel to No. 12 UCF on Sunday, February 6, to take on the Knights in Orlando.
Clemson won the doubles point, then won four quick singles matches to clinch the match. Georgia Southern battled at the top of the singles lineup, however, as both Silvia Martinez Jiminez and Sophie Wagemaker pushed their matches to third-set tiebreaks.
Wagemaker would ultimately fall to Cristina Mayorova at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 3-6, (10-7) while Martinez Jiminez would fall to Eleni Louka at No. 1 singles, 6-3. 3-6, (10-2).
"I'm glad we could finally get in a match," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "After having last weekend's matches postponed, it was good to get out and compete. Clemson is a strong team, and certainly did a good job controlling play indoors. It's not entirely our element, but we definitely put in some good work. There's loads to learn from today and we will get to work on those things starting Monday."
