Women's Tennis Sets New Sun Belt Mark With 4-2 Win At Georgia State

Eagles pick up their fifth league win, improve to 13-8 overall

ATLANTA - The Georgia Southern women's tennis team knocked off Georgia State, 4-2, on Friday to win its program-best fifth Sun Belt match of the season.

The Eagles improved to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in Sun Belt play, surpassing the four wins the team achieved during the 2019 campaign. Georgia State fell to 2-15 overall and 0-8 in the league with the loss.

Georgia State captured the doubles point between the two teams by winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The Eagles' duo of Paula Boixader and Nadja Meier claimed a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the Eagles clinched the match by winning at the No. 3-6 singles spots. Charlotte van Diemen, Paula Hijos and Elizabeth Goines all won straight-set victories while Sophie Wagemaker clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-6, 6-1 win over Ellie Aldrich at No. 3 singles.

"Georgia State really battled today," Georgia Southern Head Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "They came out with a lot of positive energy and they played some extremely good doubles. They definitely had some good momentum going into singles. Getting first sets by Sophie, Lot, Pauli and Liz was the turning point and gave the team the jolt of energy we needed. Getting straight set wins from Lot, Pauli and Liz was exactly what we needed. And a big time win by Sophie playing such solid tennis as she won in the third. We will get in a light practice tomorrow and get ready for an extremely strong Emory team on Sunday for Senior Day."

Georgia Southern returns to action on Sunday, hosting the No. 3-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Emory, at 1 p.m. The Eagles will be honoring Paula Boixader and Charlotte van Diemen in a pre-match ceremony for Senior Day.
