Women's Tennis Blanks Troy, 4-0; Closes Out Regular Season On 8-Match Win Streak

Eagles finish off an unbeaten Sun Belt season at Wallis and take huge momentum into the Sun Belt Tournament

STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern women's tennis team closed out the 2021 regular season by picking up a 4-0 Sun Belt Conference win over Troy on Sunday morning to run its current win streak to eight.

The Eagles (16-8, 7-3 SBC) finished off an unbeaten home season against Sun Belt opponents and also went a stellar 10-2 at the Wallis Tennis Center in 2021. Troy falls to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the Sun Belt with the loss. Georgia Southern now turns its attention to the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which takes place Thursday through Sunday, April 15-18, in Peachtree City, Ga. The tournament bracket will be released later on Sunday by the Sun Belt Conference.

The 8-match win streak is the longest for Georgia Southern since the 1996 team ended the season on an 12-match win streak. The 16 wins in a single season is the most for Georgia Southern women's tennis since the 1982 team that went 17-2. And the 7-3 conference mark is the best league mark for the Eagles since Georgia Southern also went 7-3 in 2009, at that time playing in the SoCon.

"I'm so incredibly impressed with how hard the girls have been working," Georgia Southern Head Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "We are coming together at the right time in doubles, and with their singles game, nobody wants to be on the court against them. They just know that we're relentless and fighting for each and every point. Our girls don't let up. The biggest thing I see, is when they have a disappointing shot or miss a shot, the girls bounce back so quickly. For me as a coach, that's really nice to see. So now we have a lot of momentum going into the conference championship. I think we're in a good place. And not just with the momentum. I think we have other people who are aware of us, and right now nobody wants to play us. I'm excited."
