STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern women's tennis team ran its win streak to four with a 4-1 Sun Belt Conference win over visiting Appalachian State on Sunday morning at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles (12-8, 4-3 SBC) completed a perfect three-match homestand at Wallis this week with the victory over the Mountaineers (4-9, 3-4 SBC). Georgia Southern will hit the road for its next two matches, starting with a Wednesday 4 p.m. match against Mercer in Macon.
After a quick win at No. 3 doubles by
Elizabeth Goines and
Sonja Keranen for the Eagles, App State took the remaining two doubles matches to claim the doubles point.
In singles, the Eagles won five of six first sets. Goines delivered a rapid 6-0, 6-1 win over Peri Tippins at No. 6 singles, then
Sophie Wagemaker and
Nadja Meier quickly followed suit with straight-set wins.
Mila Hartig clinched the match at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Virginia Poggi.
"I feel like as long as we're competitive in doubles, win or lose," Head Coach
Sean McCaffrey said. "Taking that momentum going into singles, I think we are one of the strongest teams in the conference. Nobody wants to play us in singles. Because they know we are just relentless, and that you're not going to get a lot of free and easy points against us. Winning five of the first sets, we know it's demoralizing for the other team. We feel really good when those things happen, and it's a part of what we do.'
On the four-game win streak, Coach McCaffrey said, "I was hoping for it about a week and a half ago, but that's about the same amount of time we were out for COVID-19. But I feel like now that we're in good shape. As long as they stay hungry, and improve every day, I think we've got a good chance at some of our goals."
