STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis notched its fourth won out of its last five matches with a 4-0 victory over in-state rival Mercer on Wednesday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improved to 10-8 with the win, while Mercer falls to 5-6. Georgia Southern returns to Wallis on Saturday, taking on Coastal Carolina in Sun Belt Conference action at 1 p.m.
Georgia Southern collected the doubles point by overcoming an early 1-0 deficit as Mercer won at No. 1 doubles. The Eagles tied things up with a win at No. 3 doubles, then
Paula Boixader and
Nadja Meier broke serve at 6-5 to collect the 7-5 win and the point.
Meier,
Mila Hartig and
Charlotte van Diemen then notched straight-set singles wins to clinch the victory for the Eagles.
"Winning the doublespoint gave us momentum going into singles, which is something we've had trouble with as of late," Georgia Southern Head Coach
Sean McCaffrey said. "Both at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, they weren't playing their best tennis at the beginning, but as things got deeper into the match they started trusting their shots, and I'm proud of them for that. In singles, getting first-set wins from Mila, Lot, Sophie and Nadja and also getting the very first games of the second set - once we got those 1-0 and 3-0 leads, it just gave everyone else more confidence, and an opportunity to breathe and just play their points.Â
"I felt like today was quite good," Coach McCaffrey said. "Earning a match 4-0 against Mercer, who's a real tough team because they fight and fight hard - I'm really proud of today's result."
