STATESBORO - Georgia Southern junior guard Mya Burns has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Burns scored a career-high 24 points in Georgia Southern's 121-105 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday in the Eagles' lone game of the week. She hit 9-of-18 shots from the floor, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, and eclipsed her previous career high of 20 points set earlier this season against FIU.
Her final basket of the game was a three-pointer that enabled the Eagles to set a new school record for points in a game. The 121 points scored by Georgia Southern eclipsed the 119 scored against Eckerd College on December 3, 1982, in a 119-49 win over the Tritons.
The weekly award is the first for Burns in her career and she becomes the fifth different Eagle to earn a weekly award from the Sun Belt Conference in head coach Anita Howard's tenure, joining A'Tyanna Gaulden (12/29/20), Shondell Vickers (1/4/21), Terren Ward (2/8/21) and Alexis Brown (12/3/19).
Burns and the Eagles return to action on Friday, visiting Kennesaw State for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest against the Owls.
