Georgia Southern notches second straight double-digit Sun Belt win; Kishyah Anderson's 20 points leads the Eagles
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's basketball picked up its eighth straight win on Saturday afternoon, closing out the 2025 calendar year with a 67-54 win over App State at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center.
The Eagles improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while App State fell to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the league. Combined with Thursday's 21-point win over Georgia State, it's the first time the Eagles have had back-to-back double-digit Sun Belt wins since January of 2020.
Georgia Southern shot 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter to build an 18-13 lead on the Mountaineers after one. Thanks to Kishyah Anderson's 10 first-half points, the Eagles took a six-point lead into halftime, 33-27.
In the third quarter, the Eagles held the Mountaineers to just eight points and only 3-of-9 shooting from the floor in extending their lead to 14 points, 49-35. Georgia Southern pushed that lead to 20 points midway through the fourth before settling for the 13-point victory.
Kishyah Anderson led a trio of Eagles in double figures with 20 points, while Destiny Garrett hit for 16 points in 40 minutes on the court. Shanti Simmons added 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
App State was led by Jayden McBride's 16 points and 12 points from Daisia Mitchell.
Eagle of the Game
Anderson recorded her first 20-point output as an Eagle by hitting 8-of-13 shots from the floor, including hitting both of her three-point attempts. She added five rebounds, an assist and a steal and the senior has now reached double figures in seven contests this season.
Stat of the Game
The Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor (26-of-52) for the fourth time this season. Georgia Southern also shot 50 percent in wins over Central Michigan, Mercer and Coastal Georgia.
Quotables
Head coach Hana Haden on closing out 2025 with the win over the Mountaineers
"It was important for us to get this win to go into the break at 2-0 in the Sun Belt. It was a great effort from our group, Shyah made some huge plays for us and Des here with 40 minutes. To hold a team like that to 54 points - they're really hard to guard and they run a lot of different things. That was a huge challenge, especially on only one day of prep."
Senior Kishyah Anderson on her first 20-point game as an Eagle
"It feels good. I felt like I was getting to all my spots and my teammates were finding me, and I just hit some shots."
Next Up
Georgia Southern will return after the holiday break on New Year's Day, traveling to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion in a 2 p.m. Sun Belt Conference matchup.
