Sophomore averaged 12 points, 12 rebounds and four assists per game for the Eagles at South Alabama
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern sophomore forward Shondell Vickers has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Vickers earns the honor for averaging 12.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game in the Eagles' road Sun Belt Conference split at South Alabama over the weekend. The Waycross, Ga., native scored 12 points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds in Friday's contest against the Jaguars, then helped lead Georgia Southern to a 78-71 win over South Alabama on Saturday with 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Vickers has now scored in double figures for the Eagles in five straight games, and her 15-rebound contest on Friday was her fourth game this season with double digit rebounds.
With A'Tyanna Gaulden earning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors on December 29, this is the first time that Georgia Southern has had back-to-back Conference Players of the Week since 1996-97, when Telly Hall was the SoCon Player of the Week on January 27 and Tarsha Askew earned the honor on February 3. Vickers also joins Gaulden, Alexis Brown and Angel McGowan as Sun Belt Conference Players of the Week since the Eagles joined the conference in 2014, and the 2020-21 season is the first time two different Eagles have earned Sun Belt weekly honors in the same season.
Vickers is in her first season with Georgia Southern after transferring from Florida SouthWestern State. She is averaging 9.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, ranking third in the Sun Belt in rebounding. Vickers also ranks 12th in the league in blocked shots per game (0.8) and seventh in offensive rebounds per game (3.4).
Vickers and the Eagles will next be in action on Friday, February 8, hosting Appalachian State in Sun Belt Conference action at 6 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse.
