Senior led the Eagles to a 28-point win over Western Carolina last Monday
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern senior guard A'Tyanna Gaulden has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week, announced today by league officials.
Gaulden scored 19 points, adding four rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists in the Eagles' 89-61 win over Western Carolina on the final day of the GSU Holiday Classic. The senior from Ocilla, Ga., hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point range, in helping Georgia Southern secure a winning record in the non-conference portion of the 2020-21 slate.
It was the fifth double-digit scoring performance for Gaulden out of seven games so far this season. The transfer from Arkansas leads the Eagles in scoring this season at 12.6 ppg.
Gaulden is the first Georgia Southern women's basketball player to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week honors since Alexis Brown was named the league's Player of the Week on Dec. 3, 2019. She joins Brown and Angel McGowan as the only Eagles to earn Sun Belt weekly honors since Georgia Southern joined the league in 2014.
In addition, Gaulden was named the Sun Belt's Player of the Week by College Sport Madness. The website identifies players of the week for each Division I conference weekly.
Gaulden and the Eagles open up Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, January 1, traveling to South Alabama to take on the Jaguars at 2 p.m. ET. The new Sun Belt Conference format for 2020-21 means the Eagles will also play the Jaguars on Saturday, January 2, also at 2 p.m.
