STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern softball squad will wrap up its Fall season with this weekend's World Series. The Eagles drafted their teams on Wednesday and will play a three-game set, beginning Friday at 7 p.m. at Eagle Field.
Saturday, the Navy and Gold teams will face off at 1 p.m., then the World Series concludes on Sunday with a game at 2 p.m.
From the beginning of Fall practice, the Eagle players have been working hard to earn points - and coffee beans - during workouts and scrimmages. The two players with the highest totals were named the team captains. Junior Faith Shirley was named the captain of the Gold squad, while sophomore Aaliyah Garcia was named the captain of the Navy squad. Wednesday's draft results are below!
During each game, players will earn points similar to the Athletes Unlimited scoring system where each play is worth points, while also winning an inning and a game is also worth points. Everything is tallied, so you could potentially win the game, but the losing team could theoretically have more points. The team also will count the awarding of beans - alluding to the Eagles' Coffee Bean culture - and award points for those as well.
Georgia Southern Head Softball Coach Kim Dean thought it was important to create this type of competition in a Fall that was obviously changed by the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. "I thought it was really important to constantly keep fostering that competitive nature," Coach Dean said. "Especially this Fall with not having any fall games against other opponents. We tried to allow every intrasquad scrimmage to mean something. And it's not difficult to get our team to be competitive. But it took a lot from us all to get back into game shape, to going six days a week for four hours a day. But I think it excited them to know that we were looking at a lot of things, that anything and everything you're doing well was getting looked at and getting tallied. It allowed them to lock in more, and to explore our motto for this year of NOW - No Opportunity Wasted."
The points system is what determined who the captains for the World Series to be - and in the end, the difference between the point totals for the two captains came down to just one bean.
The newly minted teams are taking it very seriously and will be going all out to win the series. "This is different," Coach Dean said. "Teams will be wearing different uniforms. The captains and GMs wrote their own practices for tonight to prepare for tomorrow's first game. There's a different feel to it, because there's going to be a winner, and there's going to be a reward for it. It allows them to remember that their hard work was for something, and that we are preparing for a 2021 season."
