FORT MEYERS, Florida – The Georgia Southern men's tennis team secured its first win of 2020 with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast Friday evening clinched by freshman
Alexandros Roumpis' triumph over Feliksas Sakalauskas.
The GS Eagles (1-2) could not secure the doubles point, but got it done in singles play with four wins by
Pascal Wagemaker, Roumpis,
Jonathan Morales, and
Valentin Dun. Roumpis, a freshman from Athens, Greece, secured the team victory with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 score. FGCU (0-1) won the doubles point and edged out two singles wins.
Roumpis, Morales and Dun all earned their first GS career singles win.
The win snaps a four-match losing streak to the FGCU Eagles and is the first since 2012.
What head coach Sander Koning said:
"We had a solid performance from the entire team. We had great energy and most importantly, we played aggressive and decisive tennis. Jonathan started us off and got our momentum going. I am happy for Alex especially and his clinching win. He really took it to his opponent at the end. We will enjoy this and get ready for Miami Sunday."
