STATESBORO - Fresh off its perfect opening weekend of action, the Georgia Southern men's soccer team checks in at No. 5 in the first United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Rankings, released Tuesday. The Eagles are also among teams receiving votes for the national poll.
Georgia Southern went 2-0 at the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Charleston, S.C., over the weekend by notching wins over UNC Wilmington and the host College of Charleston. The 2-0 start is the first for the Eagles since 2001.
The Eagles appear in the first region ranking of the year by the coaches' organization. Coastal Carolina is ranked No. 1 in the region, followed by Kentucky, Charlotte, Florida International and the Eagles. VCU is No. 5, followed by Georgia State, Marshall, Central Arkansas and Massachusetts.
Georgia Southern has been ranked No. 5 in the region twice previously - in 2008 and after the first week of the season in 2018. It also marks the third consecutive season that the Eagles have earned a regional ranking from the United Soccer Coaches.
In the national poll, Georgia Southern received nine votes, which is the first known time in program history that has happened for the Eagles.
