Georgia Southern plays in the J.T. Poston Invitational for the second consecutive season after winning the event last year. The victory was one of three team wins for the Eagles last season.
Four Eagles who competed in the event last season will play in it this year.
Ben Carr (T10) and
Mason Williams (T5) are in the lineup again this year, and
Wilson Andress (T7), who played in the lineup last year, will compete as an individual this week.
Luukas Alakulppi (T55) will play as an indy for the second straight year.
Williams tied the tournament record-low round of 65 in the final round, the fourth golfer in event history to fire a 65.
This season marks the 13th-consecutive year – and the 14th time overall – that Western Carolina and the Country Club of Sapphire Valley (CCSV) have combined to host an intercollegiate men's golf tournament. The tournament used to be called the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, and the name was changed prior to this year's event.
The field includes four previous tournament-winning programs including defending champion, Georgia Southern (2018), Western Carolina (2016, 2007), Clemson (2014), and Charleston Southern (2004), the first team event champion.
Last year, in its first trip to the mountain-valley course, Georgia Southern shot a team-score 30-under par at 822 to claim the team trophy by 13 strokes over runner-up, Morehead State (835, -17). On his way to the individual medalist honors, GS's
Steven Fisk charted the second-lowest, 54-hole score in tournament history at 203, just a stroke off Clemson's Colby Patton who shot 202 back in 2017.
Brett Barron makes his 29th career start and has been in the lineup in the last eight tournaments, and Carr makes his 14th start in the lineup for the Eagles. Maples makes his seventh start, and Bowles makes his fifth. Williams will be in the lineup for the 10th time in his career.
Following the trip to Sapphire Valley, the Eagles travel to the Fighting Irish Classic, hosted by Notre Dame, Oct. 7-8.
