AD addresses Eagle Nation in letter form
Dear Eagle Nation,
It is that time of year again where we are about to start our 2019-20 seasons and each day is filled with excitement for the start of the athletic season. It has been a very eventful summer with many things going on, and I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of that with you all.
Students have arrived back in town and our fall sports are about ready to kick off. In fact, our women's soccer team will take to the pitch tonight in College Park to take on Maryland in the season opener as Josh Moffet makes his debut on the sidelines as our new head coach. Men's soccer, volleyball, football and cross country won't be far behind in getting rolling.
This past week, we had the Eagle Creek Baptism with our football seniors and new president Dr. Kyle Marrero and also helped on both campuses with Operation Move-In. On Saturday, we held our first President's Kick-Off and a fan fest and had our student-athlete convocation on Sunday to welcome back the student-athletes at Splash in the Boro.
Our convocation is one of the few chances we get to have all 400 of our student-athletes together and we go over our core values, our goals for the years, honor our top academic teams from last year and set the tone for 2019-20. We also went over our core values: Excellence; Accountable; Grit; Lead; Enthusiasm; Serve.
I'm really excited about the direction of many of our teams and I hope you are too!
Last Friday, Champion Society members of the Eagle Fund joined together for an Evening of Champions, a dinner celebrating their commitment to supporting student-athletes at Georgia Southern. Guests in attendance heard from Elizabeth Goines of the women's tennis team. She shared her story of how she came to become a student-athlete at Georgia Southern - the school in which both of her parents earned their degrees from. She finished with, "I want to say thank you to all of you here for giving me this amazing opportunity to not only play the sport I love but for giving me the opportunity to represent an athletic department and a university I am so proud to be a part of. When I play tennis, I play for myself, I play for my team, I play for my coach and my family, but above all of that I play for all I play Georgia Southern University."
Since unveiling the Champion Society giving level just five years ago, 33 commitments have been pledged to support our mission of Rings, Diplomas & Leaders and has generated over $1,860,000 in pledges to the Eagle Fund. If you're interested in joining the Champion Society, please contact Sally Scott at SWScott@GeorgiaSouthern.edu or 1(800)GSU-WINS.
Tomorrow, we'll head to Savannah for a fan fest at Memorial Stadium, the site of our first official football game back in 1984. Take a look at this video package creative services put together on this special event. Thirty-five years later and Tracy Ham highlights still are exciting to watch, even if we still have to hear his stories about them!
If you haven't already, I encouraged you to purchase season tickets for all of our sports by going to GSEagles.com.
Our first home football game is just over two weeks away and it'll be a special one. Not only will we hold the annual All-Sports Reunion [GSEagles.com/Reunion], where every Georgia Southern and Armstrong letterwinner is invited back, it's also our Night of Champions where we will recognize 17 teams that won titles, including four that won national titles. The 2009 men's and women's tennis teams from Armstrong will be honored for their national championships and the 1989 and 1999 Georgia Southern football teams will be recognized for their national titles.
The 1989 team is a special one as it was the first NCAA Division I football team to go 15-0 and was Coach Erk Russell's last team. It will be great to have all 16 of these teams back on campus as we celebrate the rich history of our two athletic department. If you are a former student-athlete who hasn't gotten word about this event and would like more information, please contact the EFAA.
I'm looking forward to another year of Eagle Athletics and seeing everyone out at an event this year!
As always, #HailSouthern
