NORMAN, Okla. – The Georgia Southern men's golf team was named a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Academic Team for the 2018-19 academic year, while
Brett Barron earned Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar recognition.
GS earns the GCAA All-Academic nod for the fourth straight season after posting a 3.38 grade point average. Barron earns All-America Scholar accolades for the first time and owns a 3.52 cumulative grade point average in finance. He posted a 73.11 scoring average with a top-5 finish and two top-10s while helping the Eagles reach the NCAA Championship Finals for the first time since 2010.
"To receive national recognition for their hard work in the classroom is well deserved for the guys, and I'm proud of them for their dedication and academic achievements," said head coach
Carter Collins. "A big thank you to Student-Athlete Services for all that they do to support us. We couldn't do it with out them!"
A total of 202 schools across all divisions of collegiate golf submitted GPA's of 3.0 or above, with 34 of those schools earning Presidents Special Recognition Honors, finishing with a team GPA of 3.5 and above. It was a record setting year for the award as 540 student-athletes earned the title of All-America Scholar, the most since the awards inception in 1982. Out of the 544 honorees, 269 players were Division I selections, 112 in Division II, 23 NAIA recipients, and 18 NJCAA award winners. 2019 marks the first year in which NJCAA players are eligible for the award.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate's Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
"We are very proud of Brett for achieving this goal," added Collins. "Brett embodies the term 'student-athlete.' He gets his work done very well in the classroom and on the course on a high level, and this award reflects that."
The Eagles return 10 lettermen, including four of the five players who were in the lineup for the Sun Belt Championship and throughout the NCAA Championships, to the 2019-20 roster.
