Both teams earn the ITA All-Academic Team honor; Eleven individuals named ITA Scholar-Athletes
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's and women's tennis once again earned ITA All-Academic Team honors, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Wednesday. In addition, eleven Eagles were honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
ITA All-Academic teams boast a team GPA of 3.20 or higher. ITA Scholar-Athletes must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
On the women's side, the Eagles carried a 3.52 GPA for the 2018-19 academic year. Georgia Southern's seven individual ITA Scholar-Athlete honorees - tied for the most in the Sun Belt Conference - were: Paige Christian, Lindsay Truscott, Charlotte van Diemen, Arianne de Winter, Mila Hartig, Emilia Bujan and Paula Boixader.
"I am really proud of our team for earning this distinction," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "It goes to show that they are just as committed to their academics as they are in their pursuit of winning a conference championship. Having seven of our women's tennis student-athletes make the All-Academic Team is a testament to their hard work and the leadership of Reggie Simpkins and Kayla Velasquez in our Student Success Center. This is the 28th straight semester our team has had above a 3.0 GPA. I am very proud of all they have done!"
The men's team carried a 3.40 GPA for the 2018-19 academic year in earning the All-Academic Team honor. The four Eagles who earned individual ITA Scholar-Athlete honors were: JC Alcala, Stefano di Aloy, Santiago Suarez and Pascal Wagemaker.
"I am very proud of the guys for achieving this award," Georgia Southern Head Men's Tennis Coach Sander Koning said. "This is the fifth year in a row for us, and we are looking to continue to do well both on and off the court."
