Muniz also earns second-team All-Conference singles honors ahead of this week's Sun Belt tournament
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis freshman Antonio Muniz has been named the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, announced today by league officials.
The Barcelona, Spain, native becomes the fourth Eagle to earn Conference Freshman of the Year honors in program history and the first from the Sun Belt. Muniz also earned second-team All-Sun Belt singles honors with the release of the league's annual regular season awards.
Muniz played No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Eagles in his debut campaign, compiling an overall 14-7 singles record during the Spring season. That included an impressive 10-2 mark at No. 2 singles and a 3-1 mark in Sun Belt Conference matches. He lost his collegiate debut match at No. 20 Florida State but quickly reeled off seven straight singles wins and 13 of his 14 wins this season came in straight sets.
"It's a great honor for Toni," Georgia Southern Head Coach Sander Koning said. "He has been playing well all year, and I am happy he got recognition from the conference. He is a great competitor and a great person. I look forward to seeing him develop over the next couple of years."
Muniz joins John Buckley (1993), Mark Finnegan (2002) and Vincent Patry (2003) as Eagles to earn league Freshman of the Year honors - all three of the previous winners were honored during Georgia Southern's time in the SoCon.
The sixth-seeded Eagles will open up action in the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday at 1:30 p.m. against third-seeded Coastal Carolina.
